I have the same problem after upgrading to Xtrabackup 1.6.2
I am currently running MySql Server 5.5.15 on Ubuntu Server 10.04 (64-bit).

The above mentioned workaround does work:

innobackupex --ibbackup=xtrabackup_55 --copy-back <<backup_location>>
