Setting GDK_SCALE=1 and icon size to 150% in kicad preferences makes the accelerated toolset very usable.

Two remaining issues:
1. Fonts in status bar, "Configure Paths" dialog, "Footprint Libraries" dialog, and kicad project browser are tiny (see screenshot).

2. Layers drop down is cut off in both the toolbar and in the footprint text editor.
