I'm also experiencing this problem.
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala using HPLIP Software Version 3.9.12 (or less) with the following printer/driver:

HP Color LaserJet CP4005 Postscript (recommended)

cups: 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.1
ghostscript: 8.70.dfsg.1-0ubuntu3
hplip: 3.9.12
