This has been fixed in 2012.1~e4~20120126.11502-0ubuntu2 in quantal

[Test Case]
Try to install from precise, and receive the below error message.
Install new version from precise-proposed, and it works as expected.
[Regression Potential]
Very little considering that the package is uninstallable as is.

Following is the result of running apt-get install melange on an Ubuntu Precise machine:

Unpacking melange (from .../melange_2012.1~e4~20120126.11502-0ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Setting up melange (2012.1~e4~20120126.11502-0ubuntu1) ...
Warning: The home dir /var/lib/melnage you specified can't be accessed: No such file or directory
Adding system user `melange' (UID 104) ...
Adding new user `melange' (UID 104) with group `melnage' ...
Not creating home directory `/var/lib/melnage'.
chown: invalid group: `melange:melange'
dpkg: error processing melange (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 melange
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

It seems like there is a typo in the group "melnage".

Great! I've sponsored the upload to precise-proposed. Now an archive-admin will need to push it through. Not that I changed the version number to 2012.1~e4~20120126.11502-0ubuntu1.1 That will insure that SRUs to precise will have a lower version number that the one in quantal.
