Bug Description

Just take a look at the attached screenshot.
To clearly illustrate the issue, I held the cover of my copy of StarTrek First Contact in front of the webcam.

On my desktop with a separate USB webcam, I get the same result AND I am also unable to take a second shot (image freezes after the first shot). This might be related to the webcam being an old USB1 model.

If any more info is needed, I'll happily provide.

Oh and what's more - the photo itself is not even being used in the final install (and I cannot find it anywhere either). Should this be filed as a separate bug?

The photo should end up in ~/.face and will be used by the screensaver and maybe the IM client.
Since the switch to lightdm it indeed no longers show up on the login screen.

Stéphane, thanks for your comment. So in which screensaver is it used? Because by default the screen just blanks and when resuming the login prompt appears. I noticed the photo was not used there either. There is also no ~/.face (perhaps that is the root issue in this case).

This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 2.13.17

---------------
ubiquity (2.13.17) raring; urgency=low

  * Remove webcam step (LP: #1118589):
    - User testing showed people are not expecting to be photographed and
raise privacy concerns as to where the picture will be uploaded to.
    - Provides limited benefit, as avatar only ever shown on multi-login
systems in the switch user indicator / pkexec.
    - Crashes the installer or doesn't work with certain webcams.
    - Miss detects camera presence, when it's just a sensor.
    - The recommendation is to move webcam test to checkbox / hw testing,
as video conferencing is very popular these days and should work
      reliably out of the box.

  * Do not count optional pages, when updating the progress dots. This
fixes "Porgress dots, well don't progress after partman step"
    LP: #1152746
  * Do not mark explanatory text on "Installation Type" screen
insensitive, as otherwise it's ineligible (LP: #1074386)
