Bug Description

As of subject, on 12.04 64bit fully updated, some minutes after starting the session, unity-music-daemon starts to use on my pc about 140 mb of ram.
I suppose this is not normal.

Just to provide a reference. On my 32-bit machine the unity-music-daemon uses only 3 mb of ram! So this is definitely a bug. However waiting for other 64-bit users to confirm this first.

I'm using 12.04 64 bit and it takes up 1 GB of RAM! I have a huge music collection, yes, but it shouldn't be taking up more RAM than the music player itself.

What precisely do you mean with "huge" JG?

PS: You can quickly count the number of files under your music folder by running this command in a terminal: "find ~/Music | wc -l"

I'm on my other machine now, music directory counts 12674 files, occupying 68,8 gb of space...in this system too unity-music-daemon is using 126 mb of ram.

According to the command you gave, there are 87245 files in my music folder (stored on an external drive). The number of actual songs is 58382 according to Rhythmbox.

There are some simple optimizations we could do to deal with this (like using ref-counted strings to store the albums / artist names).

oh yeah, mine is a mere 400 files since I mostly use spotify..that's probably why the memory usage is also small.

yeah, I'm having the same issue with the unity-music-daemon. I have 64 gigs of music on my computer and its using around 300mb of ram that I can see.....wouldn't be an issue if my aging laptop didn't only have 2 gigs of ram and I have become addicted to chrome which eats of tons of memory as it is

maybe just an option to turn off the lens?

Fix commited does not mean Fix released. This fix, according to the milestone, is part of Unity 5.10 and the repos still have 5.8.
