Bug Description

My machine fails to boot after updating to kernel 2.6.20-12. The exact error message wasn't written to the log but it was something along the lines of "udevd-event: execution of /sbin/modprobe failed". It seems this occurred while the kernel was initializing the USb subsystem.
I can boot wihtout problem with 2.6.20-11.

Could you please attach the output of the following commands (as an attachment, not in the comment area).

sudo dmesg

sudo lspci -vv

sudo lspci -vvn

And could you also attach the log of the crash if at all possible?

Note that this dmesg output is with the booted 2.6.20-11 kernel.
As for the log with 2.6.20-12 I cannot have it, it seems the error occurs before the disks are mounted.

Alright, I'm not 100% sure this isn't user error, but I can't spot anything super-incriminating. Although, if you could attach your /boot/grub/menu.lst, that might be an issue, and try reinstalling modprobe.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.20:

status: Needs Info → Confirmed

Which package should I reinstall to reinstall modprobe?
Meanwhile I reinstalled linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic, and I get the following warning message during install:
Your /etc/kernel-img.conf needs to be updated. Read grub's NEWS.Debian[1]
file and follow its instructions.

 1. /usr/share/doc/grub/NEWS.Debian.gz

You shouldn't call /sbin/update-grub. Please call /usr/sbin/update-grub instead!

I'll reboot now and try to grab the log...

Ok here is a manual transcript of the log, before the message that says there was an error with modprobe:
kernel bug at lib/iomap.c:254!

SMP
Modules linked in: ahci ehci_hcd ata_generic libata scsi_mod uhci_hcd usb_core tg3 thermal processor fan fbcon tileblit font bitblit softcursor vesafb capability commoncap

After comes data about CPU registers and the modprobe process, and the call trace starts with:
pcim_iounmap+0xe/0x70

is there more information I can provide?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
