Bug Description

Hi, would it be possible to add the therm_adt746x module to the PowerPC debian installer kernel please?

The module adds fan control to the G4 iBook and G4 Albook laptops. Without it, if I shrink a partition using the text-based debian installer my iBook turns into an electric radiator!! I had to abort the re-partitioning as I was worried that my laptop would be damaged from the heat.

I understand you maybe reluctant to 'build in' the module (for instance, I don't know what the effect on other hardware this would have), but I don't think the code to automatically modprobe the module currently exists. The module has to be added to the file /etc/modules.

Even if it can only be compiled as a module this would be a big improvement on the current situation. I can easily add some instructions to the PowerPC FAQ to drop to a shell and modprobe therm_adt746x.

Admitedly, I haven't tried the 11.10 and 12.04 installers, but I had this problem with the 10.04-11.04 installers and also the Debian Squeeze installer when I tried them 6 months ago. I've checked the buildlogs and source packages and don't think this problem has been fixed. It would be great if therm_adt746x could be addded for 12.04.

Thanks!

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 923094

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I was wondering if you requested this module be built into the upstream kernel(Either on LKML or an upstream bug)?

You may wonder why the kernel team doesn't just build this module into the kernel. The reason is that the kernel team is reluctant (not opposed) to apply any patches or changes to a stable kernel that is not from upstream. Applying patches or adding modules that don't come from upstream add greatly to the support of the kernel as other upstream patches/changes may touch the same area as the non-upstream patch/change and may cause other issues.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

@J Salisbury - Sorry I don't understand your comment. This is only the second bug I have raised! I raised the bug to try and get the module into the precise debian installer kernel. Are you saying it could go in the 8.04-11.10 kernels too?

I've checked the precise d-i kernel and I don't think the module is included. I can't do any testing as my iBook is in bits at the moment! I am keen for problem to be fixed for when I next install Ubuntu. PowerPC for that last two releases has been very dependant on the text installers.

From the build logs I think the d-i kernel still doesn't have the module to 'modprobe'. Without the ability to manually modprobe this module I am unwilling to run the test cases for the precise alternate CDs.
