Password screen does not appear if WorkSpace switcher is clicked before the screen turns off

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

1. Click to "select desktop" icon on ubuntu, than you see 4 desktop
2. Wait screensaver
3. Move mouse, then you see 4 desktop (NOT LOGIN PAGE)
4. Press <ctrl> + <t>. In 1 desktop runing terminal
5. Select terminal in Unity panel, then opening 1 desktop and terminal

1. Кликаем на выбор экрана в unity, появится 4 экрана на выбор
2. Ждем пока экран потухнет
3. Двигаем мышку и вместо формы входа мы видем наши 4 экрана, если тут щелкнуть на любой экран, запустится окно входа, но мы сделаем по другому
4. Жмем <ctrl> + <t>, на 1 экране появляется терминал
5. выбераем терминал в панеле unity, ubuntu перейдет к приложению открыв 1 стол и дальше можно делать все что угодно, системы входа не будет.

The bug report was for 11.10, but I can confirm that this is still present in 12.04. In a laptop set to suspend after lid closing, it's easy to reproduce by invoking the workspace switcher and closing the lid. Normally, after reopening it, you'd be presented with a password prompt, but if the last thing shown was the workspace switcher, then you'd see that instead of the password prompt.

I believe the workspace switcher (compiz' "expo" plugin) grabs the keyboard and mouse while active. So no other program will be able to take ownership of them. Hence locking the screen is impossible.

I'm not sure if this can be fixed at all.

 I wanted to add that this is not specific to unity/compiz, I can reproduce the equivalent bug in cinnamon/muffin.

I have no idea how, but I think this really should be fixed.

Still present in up-to-date 12.04.

In addition to the workspace switcher, this bug also occurs if the screen is blanked while the global menu or one of the indicators' menus is open. Depending on what application is currently focused, this might compromise information like Firefox bookmarks in addition to the current screen contents.

This is because gnome-screensaver can't grab keyboard or mouse if another application has the grab. It's an unfortunate design limitation of xorg, and is a dupe of bug 49579.
