Bug Description

The "Desktop" placeholder menubar that appears on Unity when no window is focused is currently "[ubuntu roundal] Desktop". The use of the 'ubuntu roundal' is problematic because it is an inactive element that looks almost identical to the BFB button which was present in Natty.

Desired solution:

- When no window is in focus (e.g. after logging in or after closing all windows), the word "Ubuntu Desktop" should be displayed in the top left of the Top Bar.

- If it is not possible to change the string to "Ubuntu Desktop" due to translation issues, the fall back option (to be avoided if possible) is to use just the word "Desktop"

If all of the ambitious plans in this bug can be reduced to "remove the logo we added two days ago", I'll happily accept that diff. UIF was ages ago, RC is in 4 days, it's far too late to discuss even "polish" at this point.

"Ubuntu desktop" still impacts translations, doesn't it? Can we just use "Desktop" which should have no such problems? Will your first bullet require any further changes other than removing the logo?

Iain: currently the logo is drawn as separately to the main string. It is my understanding that for Ubuntu 11.10 it is possible to just comment out the additiona calls that draw the logo.

Martin Pitt (pitti) wrote : Re: UIFe: Desktop should be titled "Desktop"

Retitling as John gave the fallback option of using just "Desktop", which resolves to "Drop the recently added Ubuntu icon". As discussed in bug 732016, "Desktop" is an already translated string, whereas "Ubuntu Desktop" is not.

summary: - UIFe: Desktop should be titled "Ubuntu Desktop"

Please retarget this for the final again, this is not appropriate for SRU.
