Bug Description

If I run gnome-control-center as a user with administrative privileges and open the System Info panel, there is a button on the bottom right corner that supposedly allows you to install updates. However, this button is in its disabled state and says “Checking for Updates,” and it never seems to change.

This might be related to the warning from the console: Error getting PackageKit transaction ID: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files. The checking for updates button should be removed in an ubuntu patch or converted to use aptdaemon as a backend.

That's not really a bug, the button is inactive because it doesn't work with the ubuntu packaging tools, it should perhaps be hidden rather than be unactivated. The label is describe what the button does when it's active

Rodrigo, having that button disabled is just confusing, shouldn't it be hidden rather?

This appears to work as of today in Precise. indicator-session pulled in libpackagekit-glib2-14. Should gnome-control-center also build-depend on libpackagekit-glib2-dev then?

I agree; the button now actually does something in my Precise install.

And now after this morning's packagekit updates, it no longer works again. So much for hoping the problem magically fixed itself.

Confirm #6 it launched update-manager, after latest updates it's disabled again but checking for upgrades.

Jeremy, no, there is no Build-Depends required there, it does runtime checking on dbus
