Same problem here. I tried to upgrade from natty by using update-manager, here's the failed log:

Let me know if I can be of any help.

This appears to be caused by the conflicts between the libatspi2.0-0 and libatspi1.0-0 library packages.

This is the workaround I did to continue the installation process from a fresh Natty to Oneiric, as some have asked:

- went to synaptic and searched for:
 at-spi2-core
 python-pyatspi2

Installing those will remove 'python-pyatspi' as part of the installation process, and thus remove the conflict we experienced.

I encountered this just ten minutes ago, despite this bug reading "fix released". Is there some other step that needs to be taken?

What's more, the update manager dumped me in a partially configured state. My sources.list file still says oneiric, even though it allegedly didn't get past dependency resolution!

Changing status back to triaged; several people are still this issue after it was supposed to be fixed.

I would request that someone experiencing this issue please attach the logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade to the report. This would help the developers track down this issue.

This looks promising:

Broken libatk-adaptor:amd64 Conflicts on at-spi [ amd64 ] < 1.32.0-0ubuntu2 -> 1.32.0-0ubuntu3 > ( gnome )
  Considering at-spi:amd64 2 as a solution to libatk-adaptor:amd64 0
Holding Back libatk-adaptor:amd64 rather than change at-spi:amd64

and indeed:

Package: libatk-adaptor
Conflicts: at-spi

Does it need to be a conflicts:? Does the package not work together with at-spi (then it should use Breaks:), replace some files (in that case Replaces: might be enough), or was that mainly for cleaning up on upgrades (then it should just be dropped)?

Note that this isn't a complete solution, as people with at-spi installed through a dependency (e. g. gok) won't be able to upgrade due to the Breaks:.

However, it might help to get the update a little further, can this be run through the auto dist-upgrade tester again?

I had this same error, but after applying the workaround suggested in #5 I was still getting the error: E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'util-linux'. I upgraded individually (wiht "apt-get install" dpkg, apt and util-linux, and the upgrade has now proceeded (manually, with apt-get upgrade).

I just encountered this issue upgrading Natty to Oneiric. It is not fixed. My system upgrade is now stuck: /etc/apt/sources.list points at Oneiric, but /etc/lsb-release says Natty.

I tried a workaround of running Update Manager, which wants to update all packages to Oneiric versions, but it failed due to a package error: E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'util-linux'.

I also tried restarting the distro upgrade with 'update-manager -d', but the program silently exits after initiating the upgrade process.

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Upgrade complete

The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade
process.

So somehow we need to completely drop the Breaks: and make at-spi and at-spi2 be able to coexist, or port all remaining apps to 2.
