dvdrip does not detect mplayer installation

Bug Description
Binary package hint: dvdrip
dvdrip: edgy multiverse - 1:0.98.1-0.1ubuntu1
mplayer: edgy multiverse - 2:0.99+
Because of the complex version formatting of mplayer, dvdrip fails to detect it as installed and thus disables vobsub subtitle operations.

I'd like to include this fix to a new dvdrip version in Feisty, but sadly, the fix does not work (maybe caused by a new mplayer version in Feisty?).
As I do not have any perl skills, it would be great if you could prepare a new fix. Mplayer in Feisty outputs the following version:
