Subject: udev: Most devices missing in default configuration

Package: udev
Version: 0.030-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Today udev was installed on my system as a dependency of another package
(I guess). After rebooting everything using devices except for the very
most common such as tty's and hard disks broke.

After some time I figured out that most of my devices where missing and
also that I could not restore them.

I remembered that a new package called udev was installed and found
that it was started in /etc/rcS.d. I removed it (mv S04udev K04udev)
and voila all devices where back.

Conclusion: For some reason it is not the default compatibility devices
in /etc/udev that are loaded but a VERY minor part of them.

This is a duplicate. Use compat-full.rules if you really care.

Hi,

I tried to find it in the database but didn't. Do you have the number?

The basics of the report is that udev creates devices only when the modules are
loaded, barring some things that are expected to be there.
The postinst already has logic to create the symlinks correctly if devfs is in
use, and I don't think we need to more than that.
