Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

Just upgraded to Natty and I realized that with the default setting "smart window placement" in compiz, I often get windows which overlap two desktops. This is a problem for the launcher as well, see bug 738908. I get these overlapping windows not by placing them there but they are placed like this by compiz (e.g. totem is often placed that way). I noticed that this is a problem with the "smart" window placement in compiz. "Cascade" seems a better setting, but "smart" is the default in natty.

I think this bug together with
- Bug #755842 (Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called)
- Bug #762001 (Maximizing/unmaximizing a window by double clicking the title-bar shifts the window towards right)
- Bug #751858 (Unity messes up geometry calculations)
(all of these bugs cause somewhat windows overlapping workspaces)
makes users run into the following bugs:

- Bug #776435 (Window maximizes on the wrong workspace)
- Bug #776982 (Unity launcher confused by workspace wrap around?)
- Bug #738908 (When windows overlap workspaces, launcher doesn't properly switch windows)
- Bug #726846 (windows near to the right edge of the screen inhibit the unity toolbar on the next rightmost screen)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on your current version. If you are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug still exists by testing a livecd (available at ubuntu.com). When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. If you are unable to test the development version, please let us know if you are able to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 11.10.

Thank you for your help and patience.

This bug is still relevant in 12.04 release. Default "smart placement" of windows and using ctrl+alt+T to spawn terminal windows ALWAYS spawns windows in upper left corner.

Rada, if you still get new windows overlapping two workspaces then we should reopen this bug. Though it would be fixed by a fix for bug 874146 so could become a duplicate of that.

If you get new windows simply appearing on a different workspace or monitor, then please put your comments in bug 874146.
