Bug Description

The 'workspaces-switcher', 'apps', 'files' and 'user-trash/user-trash-full' icons are shown in the Launcher with the same glow effect used for the running applications.

A border is also drawn around these 4 icons

Ideally the glow and the border should be switched off for the four monochrome built-in icons.

Summary of conversation with Sladen, Otto and Johnlea:

  1. Normal Launcher icons are 48x48. They are sandwiched in the order: a. 52 opaque background b. 48 icon c. 52 sheen d. 52 border
  2. The four bottom icons should be handled differently. Drawn only: a. 52 transparent background b. 48 icon
  3. The previous asset had the (transparent) backgrounds included in the 52/52x61 pixel exports
  4. The Unity codepaths are setup for 48 pixels icons and 52 pixel under-/overlays.
  5. The PNG assets are not compatible with this; and we can't do extensive code changes at this point.

ACTION:

Rosie: please can you export six items:

  e1. a 52x52 background (named 'lens-icon-background.png')
e2. a 48x48 workspace switch with glow, but without background (named 'workspace-switcher.png'
e3. a 48x48 applications lens (plus sign) with glow, but without background (named 'applications.png')
e4. a 48x48 files lens (document sign) with glow, but without background (named 'files.png')
e5. a 48x48 trash empty with glow, but without background (named 'user-trash.png')
e6. a 48x48 trash full with glow, but without background (named 'user-trash-full.png')

Sladen: to add these to a branch and propose against 'unity-asset-pool'/'unity-place-applications'/'unity-place-files'.

Didrocks: to check and screenshot result back to Johnlea/Otto.

This is the screengrab of how those 5 icons should look like, they are sitting in a 20% opacity white background (see the attachment above), without sheen, outline and automatically picked up colour. They should look different from the terminal icon.

Could you also release the source file for those images?
As the Unity lenses expand, people would want to use the similar color icons for other lenses, and lens-icons wont be exactly the same if several different people try to manually recreate the glow or get the colors right.

Xi, the Trash icon we had previously was better. Please use the
white-on-black neon styling ONLY for Dash lenses and workspaces only.

Hey Sladen, if those are going to land (see Mark's request as well), can you file a FFe/UI freeze please (and that we also signal the change to the documentation team)? Thanks!

Subscribed ubuntu-doc for their input. Can we change this now without breaking too many screenshots? Or do you think the changes are subtle enough that it doesn't matter?

Martin, thanks for considering the docs.

As for screenshots, we still need to re-take a few of them, so I have no objection to making the icon changes at this time.

If we did have a screenshot with current icons, and only the shading was changing, I think it would be ok to make this change anyway. As you say, a slight shading change wouldn't be that noticeable in the documentation.

From what I understand, each shade or glow corresponds to a status like
running or nit running. If a user could become esily confused weather an
application is open or not. Personally, that would drive me crazy.

I think icon changes should be fixed ASAP.

Piggy: interesting point.

Vish: chatted with dbarth/njpatel in London on Tuesday; my current understanding is that this is an SRU (stable release update) plan for after the release is out of the way.

Such changes are not appropriate for an SRU really. If we can tweak it today still, it sounds bearable, otherwise we'll just declare it done for natty.
