Bug Description

i386 kernel, "Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"

After upgrade from Maverick to Natty, completely empty (only background image) Ubuntu desktop, even for newly created "test" user (so there are no old Gnome config files laying around)

No error message, nothing. Just an empty desktop.

After having upgraded 5 (!!) machines to Natty, all kinds, I haven't yet seen the new Ubuntu desktop on any of them. That's what I would call an #epic_fail .

Thanks for the bug report. Can you please log-in to a guest session and see if unity works there.

Could you try logging into the Classic GNOME session at the login screen? Also, could you try install unity-2d and trying booting into it?

@Mohsin Could you please be more specific about what you call a "guest" session ? I tested with a newly created user who had no previous config files lying around...

@Bilal Akhtar :

- Logging into "Classic GNOME session" using my usual user profile gives a result looking like what used to be a normal Ubuntu session in Maverick, i.e. basically working.

- Logging into "unity-2d" produces something which I assume to be OK, get a "status" bar on top of screen, some kind of vertical "menu" bar to the left with applications search tools. I'm not familar with it but it looks like working...

- Logging into "Ubuntu session" (Unity 3D ?) brings just the desktop background and icons, no status bar of any kind, no error message, nothing else ever happens, but getting the bare desktop.

Changed in unity (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Confirmed

I believe this in *no* duplicate of bug #745996. This other discusses "invisible" Unity stuff to which one can interact with the mouse. I've got no such thing. Nothing on screen I could interact with. If I click with any button in the screen areas where I assume a panel or Unity stuff to be, absolutely nothing happens (different from wht I get in the center of the screen, i.e. a contextual rigth-button menu that is the same).

Weird enough, on same machine, booting in "live mode" with the Natty Beta USB stick gives a correct Unity display.
However starting from HD after upgrade from Maverick, no way...

I would like to close this bug and replace it with bug #772486, which describes the cause of this problem (slightly different from description initially made here)
