Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

After a period of time the Launcher stops autohiding and stays in the unhid position. The odd thing is that the buttons are not responsive. If you click on one it clicks thru to the application that is underneath it. Additionally when its in this state holding the mouse over a button does not activate tool tips, also the right click clicks thru as well. Doing a unity --reset does not fix it.

I've seen this too.

I think we need to drop the "non-autohide" mode entirely, and that will
make it easier to ensure the launcher can't think it should be
always-visible, ever.

It's a tough call. There are bound to be cries of "give me my screen real estate back!" if the launcher is always there. But leaving it unresolved just makes Unity appear 'buggy' in this; its first public appearance.

Just a note on this particular bug (that shouldn't influence the decision of what's the best option by default):
- this issue is due to compiz being puzzled in the stack order (mainly, it doesn't know that there is a window under the launcher). It's the same issue which leaded to the "invisible windows" that we still sometimes gets. That's basically why when you are in that state, clicks "go through" the launcher and the apps below (or the desktop) are affected.
This doesn't only impact the intellihide, as sometimes, some windows can be on screen and appears completely unresponsive.
There is a workaround in compiz which should "fix" this issue (regularly restack the whole windows in the right order) that will be uploaded right away beta1.

- the only false positive case we seem to encounter in the intellihide behavior as of today is a case where nux doesn't send us (or that we don't capture unity-side) the "leave" events. I'm investigating it this week to see if that can be fixed.

Again, this is an update on this bug and the intellihide state. It shouldn't influence the usability of what should be the default option :)

I have found a work around that is quite simple to get you into a working state.

1. Open nautilus
2. Grab any icon in the nautilus window (file, folder etc...)
3. Drag it onto the launcher and let it go
4. Launcher starts behaving again

After some more experimentation I've found a way to reproduce. While its not 100% it does happen quite frequently.

I use thunderbird as my mailer, and when maximized I noticed when I went to drag email into a folder if I went too fast the launcher would pop out. When that happened 90% of the time I would notice and pull back. However if I didn't and the drag went into the launcher area when it appeared it would get stuck in the unresponsive state.

Also I noticed sometimes its appears quite random as to what mouse motions cause the launcher to become visible. Sometimes its just moving the cursor to the left side of the screen. Other times I have to go to the top left corner to make it become invisible. The later case seems to happen after I use the workaround in comment #9 to reset the launcher.

One more confirmation of the bug. I just tried 11.04 beta1 live CD, and first thing I encoutered was that launcher wouldn't hide itself. First, upon starting Nautilus, and after that Firefox, launcher just wouldn't move from the screen, it stayed on screen on top of both windows (no matter if maximized, moved to the left or maximized on left part of the screen). After some time (few minutes), it dissapeared to the left, as it should be, but after some more time, it wouldn't dodge again. This change of behaviour continued for the whole testing time (about an hour), and I couldn't figure out what triggers one behaviour or another.

I noticed that opening a menu of a maximized window will solve the problem. This the "workaround" i use.
Most of the time, this bug seems to happen when the launcher "thinks" i'm gonna drag/drop something on it.

Revision history for this message
Mark Baas (mark-baas123) wrote :

I can confirm that this happens when the launcher thinks you're dragging something. I could reproduce it with QtDesigner

Click to drag a widget from the widget box, at that moment the launcher becomes visible. Then let the widget fall back into the widget box. The launcher stays on top, still responsive. Then click another windows, for example firefox and you'll be clicking through it.

Go to nautilus, drag an icon, let it drag immediately back where it came from and the launcher disappears again.

So Mark: "I think we need to drop the "non-autohide" mode entirely, and that will
make it easier to ensure the launcher can't think it should be
always-visible, ever."

I don't think this would make any sense in this case as it is not thinking it should not stay on, it is just waiting for a drag-drop. Apart from that we should not lose any more options to personalize unity.

I'm not sure if its because mumble opens a modal dialog box first and the launcher gets confused or what. Should I open a new bug or move this bug to a different state?

I have been experiencing a similar problem for the past couple of days. Don't know if it's exactly the same bug.

package details: unity 3.8.12

launcher stops auto-hiding but IS responsive.
All maximized windows expand to the whole screen leaving their left part hid by launcher (so the launcher is fixed on the left and the maximized windows expand UNDERNEATH it).

Same here as #38, only happens when running matlab which seems to use a java gui. Haven't fully been able to reproduce it at will, but it happens from time to time, so I'll try to watch this .

This particular problem seems to be tracked here though: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/769703

Similar bug, on ubuntu 12.10

When I open a bigger windows than monitor resolution on my netbook (like gnubg on my 1024x600 monitor) when I start the match analisy "sometimes" happen esactly like the first post say.
I "resolve" restarting compiz:

compiz --replace

maybe a compiz problem than an unity one?
