Note that I didn't change my screen configuration or resolution for this crash, as I just re-started unity from Ctrl+Alt+F1 (rest of session was intact). My "session setup" script does call xrandr --output LVDS1 --off, though (as I don't want my internal LVDS be turned on all the time, the laptop is closed and docked).
