Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

nvidia-settings uses pkg-config and python-gtk2 to read/write xorg.conf.

If they are not installed, nvidia-settings will work mostly fine (you can choose new resolutions, configure dual screen, etc and apply changes) but when you try to save your configuration, it will either not write anything, or write a corrupt xorg.conf.

This is mostly noticed on Kubuntu because python-gtk2 is not needed on Kubuntu, and pkg-config will only be installed by developers.

This is probably the root cause of bugs LP 439192 and LP 286424

Pau:
Did you by any chance test with just python-gtk2 and not pkg-config? Python-gtk2 is needed for some Ubuntu-specific stuff, but Debian doesn't include pkg-config either and developers over there aren't seeing a problem. Did you bring up pkg-config because of code inspection or because it actually gave an error about it? There is a fallback in the code for if pkg-config isn't present.

The fix for this bug has been awaiting testing feedback in the -proposed repository for oneiric for more than 90 days. Please test this fix and update the bug appropriately with the results. In the event that the fix for this bug is still not verified 15 days from now, the package will be removed from the -proposed repository.

The version of nvidia-settings in oneiric-proposed has been removed as the bugs it was fixing (including this one) were not verified in a timely fashion.
