Bug Description

I tried to boot using "init=/bin/sh" as a kernel parameter. I'm using 2.6.18.1 with mactel patches on a macbook 1.83ghz but I have the same problem with the ubuntu 2.6.17 kernel. I see the kernel tries to go to sleep, the hd is powered down, but processor fan and video are still on.
The last thing I can read is :
"Stopping tasks.. Freezing bdevs.. Freezing kernel threads..
_"

Any idea?

Ok, last news,
the suspend to ram works fine if you can avoid loading 'piix.ko'.
(I recompiled the kernel without piix) -- of course the CDROM reader does not work anymore.

I used to be able to susped with the stock kernel although it wasn't 100% reliable. Lately it seems it can't. It just freezes and doesn't come back. Hopefully the work going on into suspend at the kernel level will bring reliable suspend.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you in the newest version of Ubuntu? Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have just installed the latest Intrepid build, with the 2.6.27-2-generic, x86_64 kernel build. Though this was not an issue for me previously, my MacBook C2D is now doing this as well with the latest kernel.

Correction: it is not quite the same behaviour - it appears to suspend correctly, but then only partially comes out of it, leaving a blank, black screen. It then does not respond to any input, and I have to power it down completely.

Hi Xander,

If this was working for you previously and you are now just experiencing issues it's likely you have a slightly different bug and should probably open a new bug report. Also, you might want to take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend . Thanks.
