I believe the error here is that the install_device was invalid. Instead of '(sdb3)', it should have been '(hd1)' or /dev/sdb.

Indeed, or "/dev/sdb3". The lack of validation here is also bug 90575.

thank you colin for having a look at my bug!yes, i can see now that i should have the sda3 as /dev/boot. unfortunately i can't get to that point to alter it in the installation process, since now i come to step 5 of 6 clicking forward, the installer complains about "no root file system". i have read at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperReleaseNotes/UbiquityKnownIssues Crash if system partitions are not reformatted: #47046
Even when the reformat option is checked, i got the message "no root file system". i tried in different ways to get around this problem, by deletíng all partitions, rebooting the laptop from the cd once again, but i got the same error message. so finally, i deleted the extended partition, rebooted, started ubiquity, and then finally was able to start the installation of kubuntu, now with grub on sda3 instead of hda0. but, got this fatal error in the end of the installation process:
Description: Unable to install GRUB in (sda3)
Message: Executing 'grub-install (sda3)' failed.
This is a fatal error.
----------------------
ok, so I deleted the extended partition once more, re-partitioned in ubiqutiy, and installed grub to /dev/sda3, and then the installation was complete! yey! =)
but, when restarting the system, only windows own boot menu appears (i have two different windows-systems i use), and so grub is not taking over the boot procedure it seems. i will keep on looking on the net if there is any fix for this, and if you have any tips then i will be more than happy to hear what that is.

thanks for your time!

best regards, torstein
