Hi,

Please give me more details to track this down. in
particular I need the backtrace and the strace log when this
happened.
Please send me the logs against the steps below.

HOW TO GET THE BACKTRACE:
# apt-get install xlibs-dbg libglib1.2-dbg libgtk1.2-dbg
$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/debug:/usr/X11R6/lib/debug gdb --args <gtk application> [args if you need to specify the args]
(gdb) run
....
(gdb) bt

HOW TO GET THE STRACE LOG:
# apt-get install strace
$ strace <gtk application> [args if you need] >& <logfilename>

BTW I have changed the severity to 'grave', because
'critical' means

critical
    makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole
    system) break, or causes serious data loss, or introduces a
    security hole on systems where you install the package.

  but this problem actually doesn't break *anything*, rather

grave
    makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or
    causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing
    access to the accounts of users who use the package.

 matches.

Hi Akira,

Getting the backtrace for this problem is very hard since the
application exits immediately with no possible backtrace when the
problem is encountered. I spent a lot of time tracking down the problem
when I first encountered it by stepping through function after function
until I thought that I had come as close as possible to the culprit. At
the time I suspected _XF86BigfontQueryFont somewhere deep in the bowels
of xlibs; unfortunately, I don't have the backtrace from my
investigation. The code triggering the problem in VMware Workstation's
GTK interface is as follows:

     GdkFont*
     VMUIAppLoadFontTrebuchet(const char* weight, // IN
         int size) // IN
     {
 GdkFont *font = NULL;
 char *fontsTrebuchet[] = {
    "-*-trebuchet*-%s-r-*-*-%d-*-*-*-*-*-*-*",
 };
 int i;

 for (i = 0; i < sizeof fontsTrebuchet / sizeof fontsTrebuchet[0]; i++) {
    char buf[1024];
    Str_Sprintf(buf, sizeof buf, fontsTrebuchet[i], weight, size);
    font = gdk_font_load(buf);
    if (font) {
       break;
    }
 }
 return font;
     }

When I changed "trebuchet" to "lucidasans", the problem disappeared. I
assume a similar piece of code in gtkfontsel causes the fault there.
I've attached the strace output for gtkfontsel.

Let me know if you still need a backtrace, and I will try to get some
time to get one as close to the source as possible.

Hi Akira,

There was a (mis)configuration on my system causing this problem.
Sometime back I had added Sun's distribution of Lucida TrueType fonts
to my defoma font list manually with `dfontmgr`. I manually removed the
entries recently, and the Microsoft TrueType fonts no longer caused
gtk1 apps to exit unexpectedly.

Subject: gtk1.2 applications exit unexpectedly with a BadValue error when
 using Microsoft TrueType fonts

Package: libgtk1.2
Version: 1.2.10-16

For example, run gtkfontsel and click on the "andale mono" item in the
"Font:" list control. The application will exit immediately and report
the following message:

     Gdk-ERROR **: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
       serial 1246 error_code 2 request_code 45 minor_code 0

This happens when -any- Microsoft font is selected, including arial,
georgia, verdana et cetera.

Running other gtk1.2 applications that attempt to use Microsoft
TrueType fonts (such as VMware Workstation) will result in the same
problem.

gtk2.0 applications are not affected AFAICT.

The libgtk1.2 problem may result from an interaction with xlibs 4.3.0-2.

Regards,
Mikol

$ strace <gtk application> [args if you need] >& <logfilename>

BTW I have changed the severity to 'grave', because
'critical' means

critical
    makes unrelated software on the system (or the whole
    system) break, or causes serious data loss, or introduces a
    security hole on systems where you install the package.

  but this problem actually doesn't break *anything*, rather

grave
    makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or
    causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing
    access to the accounts of users who use the package.

 matches.

Bug fixed for the submitter after removing faulty fonts, and no news on
this plan. I'm changing the severity to important, we need to check if
this bug still need some work before beeing closed but it's not really a
RC bug since it's not reproducible for the moment.

Hi,

I just found this bug, while searching for a cause of crashes of xmms
when chaning xosd font.

I only have the MS ttf fonts installed under /usr/share/fonts/TrueType
and never had any other fonts except Debian packages installed.

I'm attaching the font-package list and the strace, as Mikol already
reported a simple gdb backtrace is impossible.

The gtk+1.2 package has been removed from Debian so we are closing
the bugs that were still opened against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read

this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
