Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

Using natty with all updates.

Whenever I open a window in Unity, the menu bar becomes partially or fully blank (though the notification area remains as normal). This occurs with almost every app. But I am sure that the menu bar is there, because if I click at that area, menus come as normal, but the bar still remains blank.

I have also noticed a rhythm in how they become blank; When I start gnome-terminal, it becomes partially blank, however if I open a tab in the terminal (using either the menu or the keyboard shortcut), the menu bar comes back. If I switch the tab back to the first one in gnome-terminal, the bar becomes blank (partially or fully) once again.

Attached are some screenshots.

This looks like a clipping/rendering issue. The actual items are created using Cairo and painted as gl textures.

Jay, could you please take a look please. The glxinfo and xoutput are already attached to the bug.

Since it has been confirmed, and all kind of information that would be needed by a developer is present, I am triaging this and setting importance the same as upstream.

Some of what is reported her is exactly what I see in bug 692905 - I think they may be the same. I've posted lots of information to that bug; maybe you could take a quick look?

Hey Bilal, I'd like to move this to after the Xorg update that's landing this week to see if the new drivers fix the issue.

Thanks Neil for the milestone change. It so appears that its a driver
issue more than a Unity bug, since its affecting only me and some other
ATI mobility radeon users as well, not all unity users in general

Now, the situation is worsening. Sometimes, the *whole* top panel
becomes blank. To bring it back, I have to click the place where the
indicator-session icon is there. Once I click it, the whole bar comes
back. This cycle repeats until the panel has completely become blank
except for these indicators:

1) indicator-session
2) indicator-datetime
3) indicator-me
4) indicator-messaging
5) indicator-sound

Attached is a screenshot.

I would just like to add it does not only affect ATI radeon users. I have the same issue with my standard on board Intel GMA graphics. Clicking on the session button on the right on my panel most of the time restores my Ubuntu application launcher icon but not the rendering of the panel menu (the menu works but nothing on the panel). The panel menu seems to be working 'stable' in evolution, for all other applications that support the appmenu I can only restore it by logoff/logon (to have it fail again).

It appears that this has been fixed (atleast in my case). I am running 3.4.2-0ubuntu2
. I will mark this bug 'fix released' if one more out of the 6 affected people can confirm that this is fixed.
