I solved the (my) problem (reinstalled alsa). However, the fact that
update-modules wanted to update modules for a non installed
 packages souns a bit strange.

 Thanks,
 a.

Hi,

as this seems to be the known alsa-base floating symlink problem, I
think you can merge this bug with #249539.

Greetings, Bastian

Subject: /sbin/update-modules: update-modules: cat: alsa: No such file or
 directory

Package: modutils
Version: 2.4.26-1
Severity: critical
File: /sbin/update-modules

after removing some compiled alsa-modules, removing
 nvidia-kernel gave me the message

cat: alsa: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing nvidia-kernel-common (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I'm not sure the bug pertains to update-modules, but this is
 actually its output.

I marked the bugs as critical because my system is now pretty
unusable (I can't reinstall nvidia drivers).

This bug was closed weeks ago in Debian (though the actual bug in the BTS wasn't
closed until recently), so Warty has the fix already
