Bug Description

Random copy, paste, highlight, delete, and mouse moving occurring while typing even though hand is not in contact with touchpad. I have enabled the "disable touchpad while typing" option. I was expecting to be able to type without random copy/paste/delete/highlight and moving occurring. Instead the it randomly performing the aforementioned functions--but only while typing. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Dell Studio Laptop with no external mice or keyboards. I have also tested the touchpad/typing combination and it appears that I can delete things while typing (I held down a key) by simply highlighting it with the mouse.

Hi Ellinor,

Thanks for reporting the bug and making ubuntu better. The description of the bug is incomplete. I would like to know the touchpad model and laptop model before moving on.

For any help on debugging touchpad you may refer this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection

I have the same bug, it has been occurring for few months now, mainly in Eclipse. I use a desktop computer, I don't have a touch pad. What happens is that every few minutes, the copy paste buffer gets pasted at about ten random places in my source code. I can press ctrl-z a couple of times to fix it, but when I save, the random paste occurs again, in different places. These places are really random, it's not in places where I have edited the source recently. And it's extremly annoying, it makes it very hard for me to work.
It started a few months ago when I was using a php editor in eclipse, I blamed php for it. It didn't happen after I quit working with php, but today it started again. Now it happens in java code. I did install a new mouse yesterday. I'll go back to the old mouse, see if that helps.

right-top and right-bottom corners create button presses if you tap them:

$ synclient
...
    RTCornerButton = 2
    RBCornerButton = 3
...

To fix this, run this command (put it in your start-up if you care):

$ synclient RTCornerButton=0 RBCornerButton=0

Ellinor Crux, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

The tip about synclient was very helpful to me. My normal typing position was causing random middle-clicks to occur and I had no idea what was going on. Disabling RTCornerButton and RBCornerButton fixed this.

I had the same problem as XTien above, i.e. random pasting when using text editors. Also tab windows would open randomly when scrolling ebay lists. This was with Ubuntu 18 LTS, Thinkpad E480 and Acer wired mouse. Tried re-installing Ubuntu, different text editor (sublime & atom) and finally worked out it was being caused by the mouse; changed mouse and everything seems to be okay.
