Bug Description

People seem to have a lot of questions <http://www.google.com.au/search?q=bzr+windows+ssh> about how to set up SSH keys, especially on Windows. Perhaps we should add a section to the user guide about this, building on <http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/Bzr_and_SSH>; in particular because we have essentially our own key management on Windows.

Adam: You got here before me. I'd be happy to pass my notes to you. I found that Windows folks without any Un*x background have a lot of questions. So my notes are intended to fill in some "gaps" in their background. For example, the first question I got from my crowd was "what is ssh?" And although this is obviously not the place for a full answer, they need to understand from an operational perspective why they are doing each step. I also point out some reasons why you might *not* want to use the present implementation of bzr's authentication.conf. Stuff like that. You could do with with what you want. There is nothing especial about my experience, and I just wrote notes in a cookbook style with some sidebars for people who want to learn more about the guts.

Martitza: Being a Unix/Windows user myself, I'm very familiar with the types of questions you guys get (as I generally do quite a bit of asking myself ;). I've basically copy pasted http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/Bzr_and_SSH into a little document, with a few wording changes and the addition of a troubleshooting section, which details an issue I commonly have with ssh.

I do plan on making both articles more friendly in the future, and would much appreciate your notes. :)

(Not being much of a launchpad active helper, I'm trying to figure out how to push my changes to Launchpad at the moment..)

Martitza, did you ever get a chance to forward your notes so that we can finish this off?

Hi, John.

I thought I attached my notes to an ssh bug report. Maybe I just sent them
to a couple people for comments -- I really don't recall, it's been so
long. I'm in the middle of a few other things but will try to dig them up
and attach to this bug within a few days.

Sorry! I thought I uploaded these notes back in November. Here they are. These are just my own rough notes which I used to build a presentation to some of our teams. It is not polished documentation. Feel free to use this like any other contribution to bazaar, in whole, in part or not at all, at your own risk. Copyright is assigned to Canonical.
