Bug Description

I downloaded the Maverick source DVD from:

  http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/DVDs/ubuntu/10.10/release/source/

I got the ubuntu-10.10-src-1.jigdo and ubuntu-10.10-src-1.template files, and ran jigdo-lite on a Lucid machine to produce
the .iso, which passed all the checksums. However, the .iso is only 1.4GB:

  -r--r--r-- 1 gnu uucp 1515292672 2010-10-12 20:49 /d1/linux-releases/ubuntu/ubuntu-10.10-src-1.iso

It is missing many packages. For example, just in the z's:

 $ /mnt/ubu10.10src/pool/main/z$ ls

 zip zlib zope.interface zsh

But in my installed Maverick UNR laptop, dpkg -l shows zeitgeist and zenity packages that are installed but which are not on this source DVD.

For another example, compiz is not in the source release:

 $ find /mnt/ubu10.10src -name \*compiz\* -print

produces nothing.

These packages were in the daily source release builds that preceded the final Maverick release, e.g.:

 $ find /mnt/mav -name \*compiz\* -print

produces a dozen lines of output, when run against maverick-daily-20101005-src-1.iso

What I expected to happen: I expected the source code of every package in the released Ubuntu CDs and DVDs to appear in the Source DVD. I also expected the source code of GPL and LGPL licensed packages, such as compiz, to be available alongside the binaries.

The main issue here is aggregating all the source packages used on all the different CD images, of which there are many - the source DVDs need to contain the intersection. Thus things like zeitgeist won't show up on the ones we currently build because it's only on UNR, and the source DVD is currently built with the Ubuntu alternate CD and is supposed to correspond to it.

That said, something else is wrong here. I think what happened is that the server source ISO was published over the top of the alternate source ISO. I'll correct this.

In future, we should build a single source image that contains the union of all the source we distribute. That would be more efficient for us and more likely to be useful to the consumers of source images.

I've republished images as follows (may take a while to sync out to mirrors):

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/release/source/
  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/releases/maverick/release/source/

These correspond to Ubuntu alternate and server CD images respectively.

At the moment we don't build source images that correspond directly to desktop or netbook CDs (though desktop is pretty close to alternate). This is unfortunate, although I don't believe we're in violation of anyone's licence since we publish full source to everything on archive.ubuntu.com (which is probably much better mirrored, and certainly easier to grab source to individual packages from). The last paragraph of my previous message indicates how I think we should solve this.

Running a "daily" build, and then I'll inspect that and republish if it looks good.

Could you have a look at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/source/20101017/source/

... please, and let me know if it looks better? (The URL is a bit odd and I haven't had time to sort out proper HTML, sorry.) I did a quick check of the .list files and it looks a lot more complete to me.

This looks OK to me, so I've published it:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/release/source/

I've also removed the old per-flavour images, and installed HTTP redirects.
