Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

The "Unsafe device removal" notification (which is shown when you remove a device before unmounting it), disappears very fast, so I have no time to read it fully.

I propose to enlarge the notification close time (20-30 secs, for instance).

Thanks for your report. I'm not sure this is needed: the close time is as long as it takes to write to the device. In my opinion there is no need to keep a dialogue open for the dialogue's sake, but I'll leave the decision to Martin.

I agree to Daniel here, there's no need to artificially prolong the waiting time; if the dialog disappears so fast that the user cannot read it, there's nothing for him to worry about anyway. However, it does look confusing.

I have a rough idea about how to make it only appear if writing back the data would take at least a second.

How can the system writes to a device that has been removed? If the user remove his USB memory without unmounting it, the pain is already done. In that case, an informative notification could be showed and therefore the user could be warned about unmouning before removing. But this will need a sufficient waiting time so the user can read it calmly.

Ricardo,

ah, sorry, I mixed that up with the progress bar dialog that is shown *while* the data is written back. That indeed has a variable time.

The notification that is shown after an unsafe removal has a fixed time (ten seconds). I'm fine with increasing the time. However, I'd like to keep this bug open for above issue.

Sorry, I don't speak English very well, and I did not explain well. Thank you very much, Martin. I think your solution (10->20 secs) is great :)

We stopped using gnome-volume-manager in 8.10, thus this is obsolete now.
