Bug Description

I am trying to use the current Ubuntu 10.10 beta of the netbook edition inside a VirtualBox VM, but the netbook UI session doesn't get loaded, Instead just the default wallpaper is shown (without mouse cursor) and no system activity happens. The system itself is not frozen though, I can CTRL+ALT+F1 my way out, stop gdm and even successfully start a GNOME session with "startx", so it doesn't seem to be an X server problem, it's just the netbook UI session that is unable to load.

Reproducability with LiveCD:
- Boot the Ubuntu 10.10 beta Netbook Live CD inside a VirtualBox VM
- Select "Try it out" instead of "Install" (installing works fine)
- experience the freeze

Reproducability with installed system:
- Install Ubuntu 10.10 beta Netbook edition from the Live CD inside a VirtualBox VM
- when the freeze happens CTRL+ALT+F1 to console and run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade" to update the beta with a lot of more recent packages
- reboot and still experience the freeze

If there is some log files you might need, please tell me what I should provide.

If you mean by "latest build" updating to the latest package versions by "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade", then yes: The issue is still reproducible.

I see this also on my EEEPC 1000hd. Launching the UNR 2d works fine, however.

Thanks for reporting this bug, it's still incomplete however (there should be no other issue with virtualbox, it should just say it's not supported).

Can we have some info about your card? It's better to report a bug with ubuntu-bug unity which will provides us the needed info. Thanks.

@Omer: people using virtualbox which doesn't have the acceleration support will have the message about "not supported". That's how I wrote and debug it btw :-)

Even with the acceleration, it seems to not be supported, rise the status of the bug then. It will hopefully be fixed with the compiz migration.
