Bug Description

Binary package hint: cairo-dock

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release: 10.10

$ apt-cache policy cairo-dock
cairo-dock:
  Instalados: 2.2.0~0rc1-0ubuntu1
  Candidato: 2.2.0~0rc1-0ubuntu1
  Tabla de versión:

        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/universe i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything was working great but a couple of days ago, after some update, the OpenGL mode start crashing. This crashes seems to be related to the fact that I want to use multiple launch panels.
I purge the installation and reinstalled. Everything was working until I added a second launch panel.
The non-OpenGL version works just fine.

Hi,
thanks for reporting this.
I myself use 2 docks at once with no problem, but I'll try to reproduce it.

This is still broken for me in Maverick. I have to start cairo-dock with the disable opengl -c argument in order to have it stay open. It crashes immediately on startup with no sign of failure, except that the dock never unhides itself. When I start cairo-dock manually with opengl (without -c) I am first put into maintenance, but when I close maintenance mode, it crashes. Here's relevant terminal output.

Sorry, Cairo-Dock has encoutered some problems, and will quit.

I upgraded my system to the Maverick beta last night, and at first all was well with opengl mode, but after apt-get upgrading the system it broke.

hmm, hard to say if the system is broken or if the dock is. I have a Intel

so "cairo-dock -c" is working fine, but "cairo-dock -o" is not ? what if you
deactivate some applets (especially Scooby-Do which is unstable)
also, could you please try "cairo-dock -of" (no plug-ins) ? Thanks !

ok so not a problem in the plug-ins.
since cairo-dock -c works fine, I'm thinking of a problem with the drivers
under Karmic.
could you please run in debug mode (cairo-dock -o -l debug > log.txt) and
post here the content of log.txt ? thanks !

But how did you compile the dock? I see that both of you are on Ubuntu Maverick so... did you use our script (cairo-dock_bzr.sh)?
Is it possible to re-launch the script and to choose the first option (Update or First installation) and if there isn't any new revision, can you choose the second option (re-compilation) in order to have the 2.2.0-3 version of Cairo-Dock. Then, can you reproduce the bug with ddd and post here the backtrace?

@ guisardo: did you stop the script during the compilation of our plug-ins?

Thx!

thanks for the debug trace !
so the line that crashees is the following:
gdk_display_get_pointer (gdk_display_get_default(), NULL, &x, &y, NULL);

I can't imagine in which way this function could crash (it's only a wrapper
to X functions)
so either we have a complete mess in the program's memory, or the X display
is completely broken with OpenGL.
the first option is unlikely, since the dock works fine with the cairo
backend.

If you could try on another similar machine with Lucid or Karmic, that could
confirm my thoughts.

Unfortunately I haven't got any other computer now, so I can't test this with Lucid.

Btw, I'm using now AWN and it's working well. Just if that gives you some useful information.

I think that there is maybe something wrong with your drivers or something else with Xorg or Mesa :-/

@Elias: it's better to compile the latest version with our script because it adds some flags in order to have a backtrace with more informations (functions + lines numbers) :)

But meanwhile you can use the Cairo backend (without OpenGL) ;)

@Elias, guisardo, Alaric & David L: is it possible to report this bug to mesa devs on freedesktop bug tracker? => https://bugs.freedesktop.org/
It will be very helpful!

Thx!

PS: don't forget to post here the link of your bug report.

Good news!

Today I noticed that Cairo-Dock works. First I guessed that's because I installed the newest mainline kernel (2.6.36-rc5), but actually it works with the latest maverick kernel, too.

guisardo, could test if Cairo-Dock works for you as well with latest updates? Anyway, strange bug.
