Workaround!

padevchooser uses icons contained within : /usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/stock/media which are not present (yet at least) in Maverick. However, If you have a Lucid (probably Karmic and earlier too) machine, you can copy this directory over. Make sure you check permissions afterwards (files AND directories), mine were 644 on the files and 755 on the directories.

Then edit /usr/share/icons/gnome/index.theme in your editor of choice:

Scroll down until you find a "#Directories list" section. Where it says "Directories=" you need to add "24x24/stock/media". I'd put it in an appropriate place within the list - and take care of your commas! Then, still in this file, add:

[24x24/stock/media]
Size=24
Context=Stock
Type=Fixed

....then save. Then one last thing to get it to work:

from the /usr/share/icons/gnome directory run:
gtk-update-icon-cache .
Don't forget the full stop at the end (we're telling the program that the cache is located in this directory). If it worked it'll say:
"gtk-update-icon-cache: Cache file created successfully."
If you see this, and you've done everything correctly you should get the correct icon on the panel.

Similar issue in Kubuntu: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/padevchooser/+bug/431015
Looks like problem really in padevchooser package, but not in DE.

I made now an icon myself for the ubuntu-light and ubuntu-dark theme for padevchooser in the menu and systemtray.
I put this icon in a modified version of the padevchooser, which installs the icon for these themes and updates the gtk icon cache afterwards.
Only icons that were used within padevchooser (for volume and such) are still missing.

People can try my package at: https://launchpad.net/~maarten-fonville/+archive/ppa

summary: - Maverick : padevchooser icon doesn't show

In lucid padevchooser uses /usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/stock/media/stock_line_in.png

$ locate stock_line_in.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/stock/media/stock_line_in.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/stock/media/stock_line_in.png

Those icons are missing in maverick.

Still missing, still not fixed.

Just how difficult can it be to add the stock_line_in.png or modify padevchooser to use another icon?

OK so it's an easy fix for people that are sufficiently familiar with Linux, but for new users it's not a good advert when yet another month goes by and the icons are still missing.

Mathieu Marquer, I presume that you mean that the icon is still NOT there in Natty?
It looks like the problem was solved a month ago, so now we just need to wait for someone to get round to applying the fix.

Yup, that the bug is still there, i.e. the icon is still not there.
Switched back temporarily to 10.10 due to system corruption issues, so can't tell whether the fix has been applied to Ubuntu as well or not.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

 -padevchooser is not installed by default.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.
Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.

I'm trying to write some simple documentation for how to record "Stereo Mix" in Ubuntu, but the absence of this icon complicates the issue. ("Next, click on the padevchooser icon in the top panel ?")

Please could someone fix this.

Its worth noting that padevchooser is deprecated upstream and no longer being maintained. I dare say it should even be removed from Debian/Ubuntu. I suggest people use pavucontrol instead.

Please do not change this to invalid. It is indeed valid *and* confirmed for padevchooser.

Still some problems with icons. For example icon of "Set as fallback" isn't displayed in Natty under KDE for me.

Well that's interesting. According to:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=580771
the bug was fixed upstream on Date: Mon, 09 May 2011. So apparently someone is maintaining it.

The simple fix was the information that I provided in my comment #9. Just how difficult is it to add a simple stock_line_in.png?
