Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

There isn't much to say about this bug. Synaptic in edgy eft is just way too slow compared with synaptic in previous ubuntu versions, especially when it rebuilds package lists, applying changes or marking packages.

Overall it is very annoying.

I can confirm this on Edgy, too.
I think it happend with one of the updates in the last 2-3 weeks, but I'm not sure.

Yes, it's true, and many times it crashes. I should collect the various error messages I get.

Especially when you select a package and needs to find and select other packages that the first one depends on its so slow you think it has crashed.

I used Dapper up to yesterday and run the update and its the first problem I noticed. (used to be very fast there)

I get this also, under dapper once the packages had been selected the apply button became active virtually straight away. Under edgy it takes several seconds.

I have this same problem. It is painfully slow and will occasionally crash after an upgrade.

It loads slow.
Packages take too long to mark.
The finding and selecting dependencies takes a while.
Search seemingly takes forever.
It crashed occasionally, seemingly when updating after an upgrade.

It is considerably slower than it was in Dapper. It hurts to use it.

And you cant check packages by ticking the box, you have to right click them and select.
And yeah it is slow.

i've found it's possible to avoid the slowness by clicking on the "Search" button, then selecting "Look in: Name" rather than "Look in: Description and Name". This will speed everything up.

Well apt seems rather slow as well, and sometime result in segfault of /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin and /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin, maybe this is connected since Synaptic seems to be a frontend to apt.

I also have experienced a super slow edgy synaptic.
The eft himself wants this fixed and he wants it done fast! :-)

+1 for me.

Note: Changing "Name and Description" to "Name" and the Find pop-pop window and searching for a package seems to speed up Synaptic considerably.

I have also found that synaptic has become very slow simce upgrading to edgy. And also it hasn't been as stable as it used to be. It sometimes crashes when you've performed a lot of actions and the program has been open for a while. No crash report will dialog come up and no error message is shown....

It gets worse with universe and multiverse repositories added. I just timed a keyword search at >6 minutes with search name and description.

If the speed is not fixable then the interface should really provide some kind of progress bar instead of freezing it with the busy cursor.

Thanks for your bugreport.

The performance should be much better with the latest upload (synaptic_0.57.11). It is still not as fast as the dapper version but that is mostly because it is now doing more because of the new auto-removable feature.

Feedback is welcome.

Cheers,
 Michael

Much faster now. Down from 6 minutes to about 15 seconds for a search.

In Karmic Synaptic is still slow. Searches, return after the search is applied, etc. Every operation takes just too much time. I have a fair machine and apt-get (command line) works just fine. The search is apparently an issue. Is any indexing in plans ?
