Bug Description

Step 5: sudo sh -c "certtool --generate-privkey > /etc/ssl/private/ldap01_slapd_key.pem"

Step 7: sudo certtool --generate-certificate --load-privkey /etc/ssl/private/x01-test_slapd_key.pem \
 --load-ca-certificate /etc/ssl/certs/cacert.pem --load-ca-privkey /etc/ssl/private/cakey.pem \
 --template /etc/ssl/x01-test.info --outfile /etc/ssl/certs/x01-test_slapd_cert.pem

Step seven uses x01-test while the rest of the page uses ldap01 as an example file name.

Also, in https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html#openldap-server-populate I had to split the frontend into two files before I could add the information.

The guide says:
# Create top-level object in domain
dn: dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: top
objectClass: dcObject
objectclass: organization
o: Example Organization
dc: Example
description: LDAP Example

# Admin user.
dn: cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: simpleSecurityObject
objectClass: organizationalRole
cn: admin
description: LDAP administrator
userPassword: secret

dn: ou=people,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: people

dn: ou=groups,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: organizationalUnit
ou: groups

dn: uid=john,ou=people,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: inetOrgPerson
objectClass: posixAccount
objectClass: shadowAccount
uid: john
sn: Doe
givenName: John
cn: John Doe
displayName: John Doe
uidNumber: 1000
gidNumber: 10000
userPassword: password
gecos: John Doe
loginShell: /bin/bash
homeDirectory: /home/john
shadowExpire: -1
shadowFlag: 0
shadowWarning: 7
shadowMin: 8
shadowMax: 999999
shadowLastChange: 10877
mail: <email address hidden>
postalCode: 31000
l: Toulouse
o: Example
mobile: +33 (0)6 xx xx xx xx
homePhone: +33 (0)5 xx xx xx xx
title: System Administrator
postalAddress:
initials: JD

dn: cn=example,ou=groups,dc=example,dc=com
objectClass: posixGroup
cn: example
gidNumber: 10000

I had to add the top two sections first, then add the rest separately.

Also, the following sections differ by shadowLastChange. Which one is correct?

backend.example.com.ldif
olcAccess: to attrs=userPassword by dn="cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com" write by anonymous auth by self write by * none
olcAccess: to attrs=shadowLastChange by self write by * read
olcAccess: to dn.base="" by * read
olcAccess: to * by dn="cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com" write by * read

in ACL section
dn: olcDatabase={1}hdb,cn=config
olcAccess: {0}to attrs=userPassword,shadowLastChange by dn="cn=admin,dc=exampl
e,dc=com" write by anonymous auth by self write by * none
olcAccess: {1}to dn.base="" by * read
olcAccess: {2}to * by dn="cn=admin,dc=example,dc=com" write by * read

and also in the ACL section:
ldapsearch -xLLL -b cn=config -D cn=admin,cn=config -W olcDatabase=hdb olcAccess

but it looks like there is no place in the guide where we had set a password for that?
Instead, I used:
ldapsearch -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -LLL -b cn=config olcDatabase=hdb olcAccess

plrca2, please provide additional bug reports for the other two issues you brought forth here. The fix I provided only addresses the original typo stated in the heading of the bug report. Any additional issues that you come across, would require their own bug reports.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.
