The attached branch simply reverts debian/control.in to the previous version. Tested building with pbuilder and the package now builds.

Not 100% sure this is the right fix, but it didn't work before the change and it does now :)

Can I ask if there was a technical reason my branch was not accepted,
or was it just not noticed?

there was nothing wrong with your work there, the uploaders just get direct email notifications about build issues and tend to read those before the bug emails, it's likely that the uploader fixed his mistake before noticing your bug...
