Switching to and using the places has become very slow and painful in the latest release of Unity.

Can people please test this again with Unity trunk? I pushed up some
optimizations this friday that significantly made things better (no
need to update the place daemons, it's purely in libunity).

When we get rid of the last sync dbus calls (there is already on open
bug on this) to the places I think we are as fast as we are gonna get
while we are using dbus as data bearer.

(ok, there are still minor optimizations I can see, but no huge gains).

Icons are still very slow to load on a dell mini 10 (something like few seconds).

The upcoming release of the place daemons will start up more or less instantly since I got rid of almost all IO on startup.

The remaining lag when opening the places is not caused by the place daemons, but almost certainly by a big memory leak in Unity itself. I am changing the title of the bug to be less misleading.

Note: This bug is very likely related to bug #604777: "Unity causing massive memory leak when hovering over the quicklists" - although it's very hard to tell if it's really a dupe at this point.

Please re-open the bug.
I'm using Unity 0.2.44-0ubuntu1 and the places take 29 seconds (!) to show up.
Just for the five standard bookmarks...

I'm on a Lenovo S12 with 2 gig RAM, Atom N270 and Nvidia Ion GPU.

The icons are still slow to render, not the place itself, isn't it?

Please, reopen a bug for that one.

It seems that the memory leak was not the source of all slowness and there is still some of it left (duplicate status is wrongly fixed).
