Can someone please, please! look into this critical issue, which is a complete showstopper for us?

Looks like you have the star label font rendering problem (the star
labels do not draw properly). This problem causes many side-effects,
including messing up the display of toolbar buttons. AMD graphics are
particular known for this issue.

Try forcing OpenGL1 by running 'stellarium -s' from a terminal.

Works like a charm. Is it possible to recompile with OGL instead of raster?

By default, Stellarium uses OpenGL2 if supported by your graphics card.
What you have done is force use of OpenGL1, which solves a known font
drawing problem of Qt (the library used for most graphics). So, either
way, you are using OpenGL - it is just forcing use of OpenGL version 1
that solves the font problem for you.

This bug should be fixed by the new font rendering code, or can at least be worked around by forcing use of OpenGL1.

I guess 'raster' confused me into thinking it was doing direct writing to the X screen. Now it's clear, thanks for looking into that!
