Yes, but there's nothing I can do about it - it's a bug in the iscan package, which is not part of Ubuntu and therefore I can't fix it.

The upstream developers appear to be aware of this, and should be releasing a new version soon if they haven't already. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=586554 for full details.

I had this same problem and GuyR's advice fixed it.

Hopefully this is resolved somehow with the final release. Average user does not care whose fault it is when the system will not boot after upgrade.

It's pretty horrible, but I suppose I can ignore errors from just that initramfs hook. This will have to be reverted at some point, but hopefully by then most of the affected systems will have been upgraded to a decent working version of iscan.

This bug was fixed in the package initramfs-tools - 0.98.1ubuntu5

---------------
initramfs-tools (0.98.1ubuntu5) maverick; urgency=low

  * Ignore errors from iscan hook, due to a widely-deployed third-party
package causing upgrade problems (LP: #603053).
