Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

I did an automatic computer update over the weekend of June 26, 2010. The update included some cups files. Since then I can no longer print on my hp laserjet 1501n printer. Hplip can no longer find the printer which is connected via an ethernet cable to a Verizon FIOS modem. Everything worked fine until this last update. Hplip is totally useless now. Also, if I go to localhost:631 and tell cups to print a test page... nothing happens. The test page goes into a queue and just sits there forever. If I go to the printing queue and tell delete the print job its gets deleted there, but if I then go to the cups webpage it shows the job still trying to print. I have tried reinstalling cups and hplip. I even tried downloading the latest hplip (3.10.5) and installing it. The install failed... something about python. The current cups is 1.4.3 and the current hplip is 3.10.2. In hplip even if I tell the program the url it says there is nothing there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does entering http://192.168.1.3/ in a browser still show the printer's web administration interface?

Doews the printer answer if you enter

ping 192.168.1.3

in a terminal window?

Can you also run the commands

sudo apt-get install nmap
nmap 192.168.1.3

in a terminal window and post the output here?

Please try to create a new print queue for your printer. Select System -> Administration -> Printing in the menu and in the upcoming printer tool click the button to add a new printer. Then the New Printer Wizard opens. On the left side open the section for network printers and wait some time. Does your printer appear? If yes, go to the other steps of the wizard to set it up. Does the new print queue print the test page correctly?

If I go to a browser and enter: http://192.168.1.3 I get a page that says: " It works!"
I went into System - Administration - Printing, found the laserjet (it said it was connected to localhost), deleted it and tried to add a new printer and it couldn't find the printer... even when I gave it the url.
I went into a terminal and did the ping.... how do you stop the ping? It keeps going and going. I finally closed the terminal to kill it.
I went into localhost:631 and found that cups had no laserjet printer listed (after I deleted it ). I tried to add a printer and it can't find any printer.

If I enter the IP of my laptop (running Ubuntu Maverick) in the browser it also says "It works!", so for me it looks that your router has reassigned the IP addresses and now a computer running Ubuntu has the IP address 192.168.1.3 in your network.

Please check your printer which IP address it got from the router. See the front panel menues of your printer or print a configuration page. If the printer is not a native network printer, for example if it is connected via USB or parallel to the router, go into the router's configuration interface (enter the router's IP address in a browser) and see which IP address the router has assigned to the printer. If the printer does not appear there, turn off and turn on the printer.

When you wrote that your browser did the same thing as mine and that the IP must have changed... it made me look further into the modem's webpage. The printer had been deleted somehow! After several resets on the modem the printer showed up again and the printer seems to be working now.
I just printed up a document that refused to print earlier...

Let's call this "bug" SOLVED. Thank you for the clue that led me to discover what had happened.
