[Maverick] "Gnome" & "Failsafe Gnome" need to be renamed in GDM Sessions dialogue

Bug Description

Today in sessions dialogue we have the Ubuntu Netbook Edition labeled properly, but OEMs have express that the words "GNOME" & especially "Failsafe GNOME" make no since to newer users. They would like to see this changed along the lines of:

Gnome -> "Ubuntu Desktop Edition"

or

Gnome -> "Gnome Desktop"

or

Failsafe Gnome -> "Gnome Desktop Safe Mode"

They wouldn't mind "GNOME Failsafe" being removed as they say "The user has no idea what this is for".

This is what I am talking about. The lastest 10.10 UNE build. It also has a bunch of other entries that shouldn't even be there.

These labels have been called "geeky" and not something an average user can relate to.

those strings are coming from gdm, assigning to the right package.

These are specified via standard .desktop files. There are a few places these files can live

/usr/share/xsessions/*.desktop

Not sure where the entry ~./xsession comes from though.

The main point is not what they are named. Just that the names be descriptive.

The other thing is "Failsafe Gnome" seems to make little since, and doesn't work.

/usr/share/xsessions/gnome-failsafe.desktop says "This session logs you into GNOME without user applications" ?

-) Failsafe Gnome is not very descriptive
-) The description is only found in the .desktop file or any application that reads that descritpion (but GDM does not)
-) The description doesn't tell me this is Gnome not starting up any startup services
    * I saw it as though Gnome without the ability to run any applications

Will propose new name & description in patch.

I've taken a picture of the proposed naming scheme. All are in gnome-session source

GNOME -> Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Gnome)
  * This is data/gnome.desktop.in

Failsafe GNOME -> Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Gnome) Safe Mode
  * This is a patch in debian/patches/11_add_failstae_option.patch

Also would like to change the description of Failsafe Gnome to better describe what it does. This description should say something in the area of:
"Disables compiz and user startup programs on log in."

If this is agreed. I can create the patch for both if needed. See picture to see how it looks.

The patch looks totally fine to me in the photo, but I don't see the actual patch attach. Perhaps you could attach the patch and then someone on the desktop team, such as Robert Ancell can go ahead and apply it for you?

the change makes sense, not sure if GNOME should be written though, space is limited on some screen and the translation could be taking extra chars compared to your screenshot

If seb128 thinks leaving out the "GNOME" is appropriate, I am guess that this would be preferred by OEM customers too, so I am agreeable if we want to leave that out.
