Bug Description

Canonical has begun an initiative to make all Ubuntu based themes available from a central repository. The goal includes a theme that will be very similar on multiple platforms such as Drupal and Wordpress. Part of this initiative is to provide a 'base theme' that all other themes will be able to use.

Currently lp:ubuntu-drupal-theme is not based against light-base-theme. We need to pick out the relevant pieces from their branch [1] and apply them against our theme.

As per bug 595621 - we need to make sure we do not depend on external content.

As a side note: I want to be especially careful that we're not using the official color palette. This will help ensure that the theme can be used by the masses.

I can understand the issue with the restricted usage on the logo making the theme not suitable for publication on drupal.org. But the color palette ?

And for LoCo teams website, we are certainly authorized and even encouraged to use the official palette. So the theme should provide it, at least as an option.

Using the color module (see bug #603464) to set the color palette would ensure that the theme is not limited the official one will allowing its usage in autorized contexts.

I know the feeling. However, it is part of their terms and I want to be fully
compliant this time around. Now that we're getting communication going about it
I'd rather just keep everyone happy.

That's exactly what I was aiming for. I was even thinking of having an option
in there that allows us to link to a page describing that very specific option.
As long as we keep our theme near theirs and the colors standardized enough
(not many slight variations), we should have no issues with this. I would like
to get a color palette of 5 or 6 colors that are specific points in our theme
to base style.css from that. The color module can handle it, but I'd like to
make sure that it has as little chance to fail as possible.

I was just wondering where you're at on this. I am working on the color module and I realized a lot of it will depend on basing from the light-base-theme and then converting the images to transparent ones as well as building a base image with all of the images in it. I will be talking to the website theme about this but I'm not sure how much they'll be able to help.

The rebase has mostly taken place. What's left is in bug 617932.
