The alsa-firmware package comes from medibuntu. One goal for Maverick is to incorporate all the firmware from medibuntu's alsa-firmware package into Ubuntu's linux-firmware or linux-firmware-nonfree packages. As we do this, file collisions will result. Unfortunately, none of the Ubuntu maintainers of the Ubuntu firmware packages are maintainers of the alsa-firmware package, so there's nothing we can do to fix this issue. It is incumbent on the alsa-firmware package maintainer to fix this issue.

There's a relatively easy workaround - you can run dpkg to install the package and force it to overwrite the conflict. If I remember, it's something like this (from a terminal):

sudo dkpg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-firmware_1.34.1_all.deb

You might need to change it for the particular version of the linux-firmware that you're getting the error for (I copied this location from an error posted above).

should be "dpkg"...other than that, thank you! I've been looking at this
thing for 3 weeks, and I was getting tired of getting an error message
everytime I updated.

I checked my list of repositories and discovered that several of them,
including Medibuntu, were disabled. I'm thinking this probably
happened in the upgrade to Lucid. Once I re-enabled Medibuntu as a
repository, everything seemed to upgrade just fine.

As Mark Erling pionted out, this is due to a stale version of medibuntu's alsa-firmware package. Please ensure that the medibuntu repository is enabled in your software sources and update, or remove the alsa-firmware package.

FAYC: you don't need to open synaptic.

Open up a terminal/shell and run the following command (I'll try to spell it right this time):

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-firmware_1.34.1_all.deb

You may need to check which version of "linux-firmware_1.34.1_all.deb" it is with something like:

ls /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-firmware*.dev

Hi ndsipa pomu and thanks!

I had succeeded on restoring synaptic functions, using terminal yet.
I uninstall alsa-firmware to restore it, but it steel to be on error issue
after reinstalling it, with :
"E:

I did what you suggested to me, and then I post you down the error issue
message:
"fayc@fayc-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite ls
/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-firmware*.dev
dpkg : erreur de traitement de ls (--install) :

It seems to be the same problem than Paul Neaveil's one, with the same
architecture
ProblemType: Package
 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: linux-firmware 1.34.1
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Architecture: amd64.

thanks a lot for your contribution !!!
