Bug Description

kubuntu-desktop needs to Depend on ttf-liberation as ubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, lubuntu-desktop already do.

This is due to metric incompatible font fallback in the case when it is not installed. Fonts such as 'Times New Roman' have no metric compatible font in a default install of Kubuntu.

See:

/etc/fonts/conf.d/30-metric-aliases.conf

For the 'Times New Roman' case it falls back to 'Times' which then maps to 'Nimbus Roman No9 L' instead of the metric compatible Liberation Serif'. I believe it also happens for 'Courier New' -> 'Courier' -> 'Nimbus Mono L' instead of to 'Liberation Mono'.

This appears to also affect kubuntu-netbook and ubuntu-netbook as well after looking at the rdepends on ttf-liberation.

ACK for kubuntu-meta in queue. If similar patches are needed for the other metapackages consider this an ack for those too.

Accepted kubuntu-meta into lucid-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

Tested this on a fresh install of Kubuntu (desktop). Upgrading kubuntu-desktop to the version from lucid-poposed installs ttf-liberation (and no other installs/removals happen).

Added to ubuntu-netbook metapackage as well:
testcase:
- check that you don't have ttf-liberation installed (which can be pulled by other dependencies)
- open http://launchpadlibrarian.net/38994194/Original.doc
- Note the number of pages and see it's different from your Windows machine (if you have one) or other ubuntu machine with tff-liberation installed (better metric font compatbility)
- upgrade to new (k)ubuntu-netbook package (it should install ttf-liberation)
- Open the same document and note the number of pages. If you have a Windows machine, it should be closer if not the same.

This was originally seen when using OOo, but I believe it would occur anywhere that those fonts are used. For example with PDFs where the fonts aren't embedded or websites that make use of those fonts, etc.

More testing on the kubuntu-desktop:
without proposed/ttf-liberation: 24 pages
with proposed/ttf-liberation: 25 pages
on windows/word 2007: 25 pages

Fix confirmed.

I have reproduced the problem with ubuntu-netbook 2.024 and have verified that the version of ubuntu-netbook 2.025.1 in -proposed fixes the issue (ttf-liberation is installed on upgrade).
