Bug Description

Binary package hint: base-installer

I am attempting to install Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 and configure 2 brand-new hard drives (500gb SATA) to use RAID 1.

I have a post at ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9355942#post9355942) and someone has replied to this thread saying he has had a similar experience here. This person thinks the installer might be writing the configuration files incorreclty. I decided to post a bug report to see if this really is a bug or not. I have tried doing the following 3 times.

I'm following this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID by first partitioning both hard drives the same way and having them use a RAID physical filesystem. Then I proceed to create the RAID partitions by pairing the appropriate partitions from either hard drive.

I've set up 1 physical partition and 6 logical partitions, and the physical partition on both drives is /boot and both are flagged as bootable.

The installer appears to behave correctly (as compared to the guide referenced above) for the most part, although there were times when I would pair two partitions (e.g. sda3 and sdb3) and then when I go on to pair another 2 partitions, sda3 and sdb3 are on the list again! Also some mds would have the phrase "Software RAID" associated with them, while others are "Unknown". It is possible that these strange issues could be related to me doing a reinstall (I've tried doing this 3 times).

After partitioning the hard drives and setting up RAID, the Ubuntu installer proceeds to finish up normally (installing the base system, configuring APT, etc), and when I reboot, GRUB2 fails to load and I get an error message saying that one hard drive is degraded. I boot into the initramfs shell, and when I do cat /proc/mdstat, I get this output:

md4 : inactive md6p8[0](S)
7713728 blocks

md2 : inactive md6p6[0](S)
4881344 blocks

md3 : inactive md6p7[0](S)

md0 : inactive md6p1[0](S)

md1 : inactive md6p5[0](S)

md5 : inactive md6p9[0](S)
