Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

This seems to happen consistently when I am viewing the xscreensaver-demo and clicking through the screensavers available. My monitor flickers for a moment and then changes to a text-only mode. This mode states that I am now in a low resolution mode and the system cannot find information about my graphics card and/or monitor, and recommends that I manually configure. It provides checkbox options for me to choose from, the last of which is to restart x. None of the options restores my display. The only way to get back in is to restart the computer. I've noticed some suspicisous lines in the Xorg.*.log file:

(WW) intel(0): libpciaccess reported 0 rom size, guessing 64kB
(WW) intel(0): DRI2 requires UXA
(EE) [drm] Could not set DRM device bus ID.
(EE) intel(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
(WW) intel(0): ESR is 0x00000001, instruction error
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.

The computer and monitor are new, and work perfectly in Windows Vista (64 bit edition). Restarting the computer puts everything back to quality. I've also noticed that Ubuntu starts up slowly since upgrading to 10.04, but not sure if it is a related issue. I allowed the bug report to collect log info in hopes it would help lead to a solution.

I experience a similar bug.
I run VirtualBox with a Microsoft XP guest under Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome). When I leave the machine idle, the screensaver will appear (no problem) then the monitor shuts off (as expected). Then inexplicably I get a dialogue "Ubuntu is in low graphic mode". The dialogue (reported above) appears; I have to shut down and restart the entire computer to restore operation. When this happens, all active applications are dismissed (tantamount to a complete system crash).
Workaround: do not leave the computer idle with the VirtualBox application visible. I originally thought this was a VirtualBox problem.
This crashing does not happen under Fedora 15 (Gnome), thus I conclude it has something to do with Ubuntu display driver.

Larry Jordan, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.
