Bug Description

I have just created my Launchpad account, and went to add a common secondary email address to my account (<email address hidden>)

I have just created my Launchpad account, and went to add a common secondary email address to my account (<email address hidden>). It then complained that this account already exists and suggested that I merge the accounts.

I clicked on merge to do this, where it prompted me for my account name. I typed in my email address, and it returned that it didn't know this account. I then clicked "(list)" and typed in my email address in there, and that screen just blanks out my email address and returns back to me with an error.

Someone on #launchpad suggested that I only type in the part before the @ sign, which seems to have worked, but I don't understand how the system is going to distinguish between the various 'jbailey's out there.

We need to search for email addresses using substrings (slow) or fix the full text search to not give surprising results in this case.

This is part of the fix for https://launchpad.ubuntu.com/malone/bugs/1406, which is up for review.
