Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

Simple to reproduce:

1) plug in HL-2170W
2) install default printer driver
3) try to print pdf or ps file using Document Viewer
4) Says "Spooling 2%" for many minutes, no print out.

I changed the driver to Brother HL-2060 Foomatic/ljet4 and it prints the PDF or ps file no problem.

Downloading the driver from here:

http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-2170W

and installing it manually allows the printer to print pdf again.

Oh, no, cancel that... it printed, but just gave a PCL XL error "IllegalTag"

Selecting Brother 2040 as the driver works, prints PDF files correctly.

Seems that this printer is not compatible with PCL-XL, so I will change its database entry so that PCL-5e gets used.

affects: cups (Ubuntu) → foomatic-db (Ubuntu)

Can you also try whether the printer works with

Brother HL-1040, Foomatic/hl7x0

and with

Brother HL-1250, Foomatic/hp1250

please tell how well these options work for you. Thanks.

Brother HL-1040, Foomatic/hl7x0:

no printout. No obvious error, the job appears in the print queue and then disappears. The printer makes noise for a second, then goes back to sleep.

Brother HL-1250, Foomatic/hp1250:

I am assuming you meant hl1250. The hl1250 driver seems to work, pdf printout is fine.

This bug was fixed in the package foomatic-db - 20100806-0ubuntu7

---------------
foomatic-db (20100806-0ubuntu7) maverick; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/hl-2170w-pcl5e.patch: Changed drivers for the Brother
HL-2170W, the printer works only in the PCL-5e mode, not with PCL-XL
    (LP: #570027).
  * debian/control, debian/rules, debian/foomatic-db-compressed-ppds.postinst:
Introduced the binary package foomatic-db-compressed-ppds. This package
contains all PPDs which can be generated from the Foomatic XML database
in one compressed pyppd archive. This takes much less disk space than the
XML database (600 kB vs. 18 MB) and access (listing all PPDs, extracting
the needed PPD) is also significantly faster.
