Binary package hint: xorg
in fail safe x you choose reconfigure x then 'create new configuration for your hardware' then press OK it appears that nothing happens and you are dumped back to the same menu. only way to get out is to press cancel.

I can reproduce this. Moving to the xorg package, source of x11-common which is responsible for the failsafe X bits.
