Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu Lucid, all updates installed

1. Log in at a console.

What happens:
* "Checking for a new ubuntu [sic] release"
* "No new release found"

What should happen: If there isn't a new version available, as there won't be 99.9% of the time, Ubuntu should just be quiet about it.

RM's, I proposed this for Lucid, and because of my super-cow powers it's auto-accepted. I'd like you to review this please, it's a small nit. Should be a one-line fix.

The output got removed a while ago, but for older upgrades there is a bug that the file is too aggressively cached, once it has content its not re-checked. I commit a fix to bzr.

I discussed this with kirkland and we will fix it in base-files. This ensures that the caching is still good, but avoids the stale information file that you are seeing.

affects: update-manager (Ubuntu Lucid) → base-files (Ubuntu Lucid)

Yeah, I think the best fix is to have base-files on upgrade, remove the /var/lib/update-notifier/release-upgrade-available flag and update the cache immediately (in the background) with /usr/lib/update-manager/check-new-release.
