Upgrading to Lucid failed, because old kernels filled the space on /boot partition (only 200MB partition).

Thanks for your report

I'm closing it because the error was due to "gzip: stdout: No space left on device" . This is not a bug with Ubuntu.
Don't hesitate to submit any new bug.

How it is not a bug with Ubuntu when the upgrade process should make sure there is enough space left?

Yes, it is a known issue and already filed against update-manager and other packager manager.
